 The First Implantable Contact Lens

Up till now the only way to reduce your dependence on glasses or contacts was with laser reshaping of the central cornea.  Unfortunately this requires destruction and removal of the clear corneal tissue that you are seeing through.  For decades we have been performing cataract surgery and replacing the removed lens with a lens implant.  These implants have proven stable and safe in the eye.  Now a company (STAAR) has spent years designing and evaluating the first implantable contact lens for the US market.  This lens is inserted through a SIDE incision and is tucked behind

the iris (behind the pupil) and sits between the iris and the lens.

This procedure will be performed in a surgery center to insure the highest degree of safety and sterility.  The ICL can be inserted under topical anesthesia.  That means that a topical numbing is all that is needed to provide comfort during the insertion procedure.  An oral or IV medication may be administered to insure you are relaxed and comfortable.  The initial FDA approval will be for nearsighted corrections with the farsighted and astigmatic correction approval in the future.  To actually “see the future” call the Leder Eye Center to schedule a complimentary evaluation.  Come in and see the ICL on display under a microscope in the office and learn the benefits of this procedure and how it differs from LASIK!
